Yoga Alliance FAQs
Is Yoga Moksha a Registered Yoga School with Yoga Alliance?
Yoga Moksha is not registered with Yoga Alliance. There are several reasons for this:
First and foremost, registration with Yoga Alliance is totally and completely voluntary- both as a School and as a Teacher. Registration with Yoga Alliance is not required to teach or learn about yoga. It even states this on their website. I have never been asked to show proof of being registered with Yoga Alliance as a teacher to work anywhere, only to show Certification of completing a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training, and typically proof of insurance.
Yoga Alliance promises a Directory of Yoga Teachers and Schools of “high visibility” - this sounds like it is used a whole lot more often than it actually is. Let me ask you, when searching for a yoga class, do you go onto Yoga Alliance first, or maybe just Google..?
I've found over the years first as a yoga teacher, and then again as a studio owner, that the entire conversation surrounding Yoga Alliance is quite controversial. Many schools and teachers have broken away from YA, seeing them as more Self-Appointed "leaders" from the West, and use faulty, cherry-picked standards to make money off Yoga Schools and Teachers.
Yoga Alliance doesn't check in to make sure anyone is teaching the actual curriculum that had to be approved by YA. Essentially, a School can send in lesson plans, manuals, etc, get approved, and then still teach completely away from what was submitted, and no one is regulating it, observing it, etc.
Even during the application submission process, which comes with a several hundred dollars application fee and if approved then an annual school membership fee, Yoga School Educators aren't interviewed to make sure they have a deep understanding of Yoga, or able to answer further questions from potential students.
Personally, it continues to fall short of my standards and seems to still be a business posing as “Industry Leaders” and “Authorities.”
They are making some shifts and I continue to check in on them. Maybe one day it will seem less white-washed and cherry picked, and we will join them. But for now, they are not in alignment with our line of ethics.
Ultimately, it is your decision. The curriculum for all of our trainings at Yoga Moksha exceeds what Yoga Alliance requires. My family raised me, as did Business and Career Mentors, to always over deliver, and that is what you will get taking any coursework with Yoga Moksha.
I encourage you to consider the information above when choosing a training or course work with yoga schools. Spend time at the studio you are planning to learn at, converse with the lead teacher to gage their understanding and knowledge of yoga, make sure it is all in alignment with YOU.
